Dallas Willard: Renewing the Christian Mind

Renewing the Christian Mind

Description

A wide-ranging collection of essential readings—all which have never before been published in book form—from the revered Christian philosopher Dallas Willard. In his groundbreaking books The Divine Conspiracy, The Great Omission, Knowing Christ Today, Hearing God, The Spirit of the Disciplines, The Divine Conspiracy Continued, andThe Allure of Gentleness, teacher, philosopher, and spiritual guide Dallas Willard forever changed the way many Christians experience their faith. Three years after his death, the influence of this provocative Christian thinker—“a man devoted to reestablishing the exalted place moral reasoning once held in the academy” (Christianity Today) remains strong. Compiled, edited, and introduced by his friend and fellow theologian, Gary Black, Jr.,Renewing the Christian Mind is a collection of essays, interviews, and articles never before published in book form that brilliantly encapsulate Willard’s spiritual philosophy and his contributions to theology. Renewing the Christian Mind offers insight into spiritual formation, avocation, and theology, and includes sections directed at specific audiences, from church leaders to laypeople looking for spiritual counsel and nurture. Reasoned, honest, thought- provoking, and illuminating, this important anthology is an invaluable introduction and companion to Dallas Willard’s acclaimed body of work.

"The Expanse Short Fiction "The Butcher of Anderson Station""Gods of Risk""The Churn" Another title in the ever popular Agatha Christie series. The suave and debonair Colonel Race must solve a question, not of 'accidental death or suicide', but 'murder or double murder'. Pretty, young Anne came to London looking for adventure. In fact, adventure comes looking for her - and finds her immediately at Hyde Park Corner tube station. Anne is present on the platform when a thin man, reeking of mothballs, loses his balance and is electocuted on the rails. The Scotland Yard verdict is accidental death. But Anne is not satisfied. After all, who was the man in the brown suit who examined the body? And why did he race off, leaving Renewing the Christian Mind download PDF a cryptic message behind: '17-122 Kilmorden Castle'? William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice is both a witty comedy and a moving exploration of bigotry and stigmatisation, and this Penguin Shakespeare edition is edited by W. Moelwyn Merchant with an introduction by Peter Holland. 'The quality of mercy is not strain'd, It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven' Bassanio, a noble but impoverished Venetian, asks his friend the merchant Antonio for a loan to impress an heiress. Antonio agrees, but is forced to borrow the sum from a cynical Jewish moneylender, Shylock, who forces him into a chilling contract, which stipulates he must honour the debt with a pound of his own flesh. But Bassanio's beloved is not as demure as she seems, and disguising herself as a lawyer, Portia proves herself one of Shakespeare's most cunning heroines, in a witty attack on Shylock's claim. A complex and controversial comedy, The Merchant of Venice explores prejudice and the true nature of justice.

Moving On to Key Stage 1: Improving Transition from the Early Years Foundation Stage

Description

"This timely book will help teachers in KS1 to implement authoritative recommendations on transition from recent reviews of primary education, and convince senior managers and parents of the value of starting from the child. Its well-grounded arguments coupled with practical guidance will foster the development of principled and confident professional judgement." Wendy Scott, President, TACTYC "Julie is an excellent writer, leading her reader through the difficult arguments about what really matters in our work with young children. She explores the tensions around the different 'drivers' in Foundation Stage and Key Stage One teaching with sensitivity but with the same clear vision she shows in her earlier books. This is an important book for students, lecturers and teachers - and a must for heads and subject co-ordinators." Nick Swarbrick, Westminster Institute of Education, Oxford Brookes University, UK "Your common-sense, authoritative, warm and inspirational words...remind me beyond all doubt of why I went into teaching." Key Stage 1 teacher "Julie Fisher's newest contribution to the debate on transitions in England is written in her usual clear and accessible style, and with the breadth and confidence which all readers have come to expect of her." Liz Brooker, Institute of Education, University of London, UK This practical book offers a series of strategies for promoting learning that meets the needs and interests of Key Stage 1 pupils, ensuring that the move from the Early Years Foundation Stage to Key Stage 1 is a positive one. It includes: Descriptions and case studies of good practice that stem from established principles of learning and teaching Reflective practice prompts at the end of each chapter Julie Fisher considers recent evidence about how children learn and questions whether current practice in Key Stage 1 optimises these ways of learning. Challenging the reliance on teacher-directed activity, she asks whether introducing more child-initiated learning could offer children a more appropriate balance of learning opportunities. Key issues include: The place of play in Key Stage 1 Organising the learning day to include child-initiated activity Observation and assessment Planning The role of the teacher This essential book is indispensable reading for students and practitioners in both the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1.

Architectural Atmospheres: On the Experience and Politics of Architecture

Description

There is a growing awareness of the atmospheric dimensions of architecture in contemporary architectural practice as well as in social and architectural theory. Architectural Atmospheres provides a pointed, programmatic discussion of this atmospheric turn. The book is essential reading for architects, planners, and social theorists who take an interest in how we experience architecture and in how to improve architectural and urban design.

As he observes, the question who we are has always been linked to the question what we are. How the West Was Lost: Fifty Years of Economic Folly - and the Stark Choices Ahead

Description

From the author of Dead Aid, Dambisa Moyo's How the West was Lost explores how the 'first world' has its wasted inheritance with flawed economic policy - and what can be done to reverse the decline. We think we know what's coming. But is it already too late? How the West Was Lost is a wake-up call for all of us. Dambisa Moyo argues that during the last fifty years the most advanced countries on earth have squandered their advantage through fatally flawed policies: obsessing over property, ravenously consuming and building up debt instead of investing. Here Moyo outlines solutions that could help stem the tide. By rethinking many of the things we take for granted, she shows, it may yet be possible for the West to get back into the race. 'An outspoken iconoclast ...Moyo shows well how fundamental economic liberalisation espoused by what she calls the profligate, greedy, self-interested West has come back to bite it' Guardian 'Succinct and sophisticated ...I applaud her brave alarum against our economic and social complacency' Observer 'A well-reasoned look at how the world's most-advanced nations are squandering their economic lead ...a prescription for stopping the rot' Bloomberg 'Clear and brazen . ..This argument has rarely have been made more concisely' The Times 'An economist who makes waves' Sunday Telegraph Dambisa Moyo worked at Goldman Sachs for eight years, having previously worked for the World Bank as a consultant. Moyo completed a PhD in Economics at Oxford University, and holds a Masters from Harvard University Kennedy School of Government. Her other books include Winner Take All and How the West was Lost. She was born and raised in Lusaka, Zambia.

How Aborigines Invented the Idea of Contemporary Art: Writings on Aborginal Art 19080-2006

Description

This is the first anthology to chronicle the global critical reception of Aboriginal art since the early 1980s, when the art world began to understand it as contemporary art. Featuring 96 authors--including art critics and historians, curators, art center co-ordinators and managers, artists, anthropologists, sociologists, philosophers and novelists--it conveys a diversity of thinking and approaches. Together with editor Ian McLean's substantial introductory essay and epilogue, the anthology argues for a reevaluation of Aboriginal art's critical intervention into contemporary art since its seduction of the art world a quarter-century ago. Ian McLean is a well-known commentator on Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australian art and the intersection of Indigenous and settler cultures. He is the author of `The Art of Gordon Bennett` and `White Aborigines: Identity Politics in Australian Art.` He is a member of the Advisory Council of Third Text and professor of Australian art history at the University of Wollongong. `How Aborigines Invented the Idea of Contemporary Art: Writings on Aboriginal Contemporary Art` is part of the four-book series Australian Studies in Art and Art Theory and is published with the assistance of the Getty Foundation and the Nelson Meers Foundation.

In this new masterpiece of historical romance from the acclaimed, "USA Today"bestsellingSherry Thomas, In his final contribution to the psychoanalytic literature published two months before his untimely death How Aborigines Invented the Idea of Contemporary Art: Writings on Aborginal Art 19080-2006 ebook pdf on December 21, 2000, the late Stephen A. Mitchell provided a brilliant synthesis of the interrelated ideas that hover around, and describe aspects of, the relational matrix of human experience. Relationality charts the emergence of the relational perspective in psychoanalysis by reviewing the contributions of Loewald, Fairbairn, Bowlby, and Sullivan, whose voices converge in apprehending the fundamental relationality of mind. Mitchell draws on the multiple dimensions of attachment, intersubjectivity, and systems theory in espousing a clinical approach equally notable for its responsiveness and responsible restraint. Relationality "signals a new height in Mitchell's always illuminating writing" (Nancy Chodorow) and marks the "coming of age" of the relational perspective in psychoanalysis (Peter Fonagy).

Rebecca L. Spang: Stuff and Money in the Time of the French Revolution

Stuff and Money in the Time of the French Revolution

Description

Rebecca L. Spang, who revolutionized our understanding of the restaurant, has written a new history of money. It uses one of the most infamous examples of monetary innovation, the assignats a currency initially defined by French revolutionaries as circulating land to demonstrate that money is as much a social and political mediator as it is an economic instrument. Following the assignats from creation to abandonment, Spang shows them to be subject to the same slippages between policies and practice, intentions and outcomes, as other human inventions. But Spang s book is also a new history of the French Revolution, one in which radicalization was driven by an ever-widening gap between political ideals and the realities of daily life. Money played a critical role in creating this gulf. Wed to the idea that liberty required economic deregulation as well as political freedom, revolutionary legislators extended the notion of free trade to include freedom of money. The consequences were disastrous. Backed neither by the weight of tradition nor by the state that issued them, the assignats could not be a functioning currency. Ever reluctant to interfere in the workings of the market, lawmakers thought changes to the material form of the assignats should suffice to enhance their credibility. Their hopes were disappointed, and the Revolution spiraled out of control. Stuff and Money in the Time of the French Revolution restores economics, in the broadest sense, to its rightful place at the heart of the Revolution and hence to that of modern politics. "

Harley Loco: A Memoir of Hard Living, Hair and Post-punk, from the Middle East to the Lower East Side

Description

'She's experienced wealth, cultural alienation, homelessness, brushes with fame, prison, rehab, record deals, a million blown second chances, a dozen broken hearts and one bloody-knuckled ultimate spiritual redemption. She even died once in the process, and may very well have had sex with your wife back in the eighties...' Elizabeth Gilbert When she was seven, Rayya Elias and her upper-class family fled the political conflict in their native Syria, settling in a suburb of Detroit. Bullied in school and caught between the world of her traditional family and her tough American classmates, she rebelled early. Rayya moved to New York City to become a musician and kept herself afloat with an uncommon talent for cutting hair. At the height of the punk movement, life on the Lower East Side was full of adventure, creative inspiration and temptation. Eventually though, Elias's passionate affairs with lovers of both sexes went awry, her (more than) occasional drug use turned to addiction and she found herself living on the streets - between visits to jail. Told with a keen sense of humour and a lack of self-pity in even the most harrowing situations, Harley Loco is a memoir about jumping in head-first, no questions asked. It's a book about living in the moment no matter what that might bring, and about pursuing, not always by choice, a life of extremes - highs and lows, pain and passion - until ultimately arriving at a place of contentment and peace.

The Harvest of Sorrow: Soviet Collectivation and the Terror-Famine

Description

Between 1929 and 1932 the Soviet Communist Party struck a double blow at the peasantry of the USSR: dekulakisation, the dispossession and deportation of millions of peasant families; and collectivisation, the effective abolition of private property in land and the concentration of the remaining peasantry in 'collective' farms under Party control. There followed a 'terror-famine', inflicted on the collectivised peasants of the Ukraine and certain other regions by the state, which set impossibly high quotas, removed every other source of food, and prevented outside help - even from other areas of the USSR - from reaching the starving millions.
